Jerusalem Opera Masterclass

The Jerusalem International Opera Masterclass is a summer comprehensive opera training program, which is held each year and designed for emerging professional singers considering a career in Israel and Europe. We co-operate with professional opera festivals, theaters and European opera agencies.


The summer 2019 program of the Jerusalem International Opera Masterclass includes

The fully staged opera production of "Rigoletto" by Verdi with the one of the leading Israeli orchestra

The fully staged opera production of "Le Nozze di Figaro" by Mozart with the one of the leading Israeli orchestra

The International Opera Competition

Concerts and master-classes

Gala Concert with orchestra


Participants will work directly with opera famous stage directors, conductors and a renowned faculty of teachers and coaches from the United States and Europe.

RECORDED AUDITION

To audition online, submit a link to a YouTube video of your audition in the application form. (The professional recording is preferable) You should submit an audition video with piano accompaniment or with orchestra.

NOTE: There is no deadline for online auditions, but early applying is recommended for early casting


Audition results

The audition result letter is sent out regardless the result. The casting usually starts from January and finishing in April. In special cases, this may take longer. We appreciate your patience and asks to give notice us about changes in your plans to participate in the summer program.


Audition requirements

Please prepare two contrasting arias of your choice (one in Italian). Applicants who would like to be considered for roles in “Rigoletto” and “Le Nozze di Figaro” should submit the following materials:

Gilda - "Gualtier Maldé! ... Caro nome", "Tutte le feste al tempio"

Il Duka di Mantova - "Questa o quella", "La donne è mobile", "Ella mi fu rapita!..Parmi veder le lagrime"

Rigoletto - "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata"

Sparafucile, Maddalena, Giovanna, la Contessa Ceprano, il Conte Ceprano, Marullo, Paggio, and il Conte Monterone - any Italian aria from the Italian opera seria of 19 century.

"Le Nozze di Figaro"

Susanna - "Venite inginocchiatevi", "Giunse alfin il momento, ..Deh vieni, non tardar"

La Contessa di Almaviva - "Porgi amor qualche ristoro", "E Susanna non vien, ..Dove sono i bei momenti"

Cherubino - "Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio", "Voi, che sapete, che cosa é amor"

Barbarina - "L'ho perduta..me meschina"

Marcellina -"Il capro e la capretta"

Basilio - "In quegl'anni, in cui val poco"

Application Fee & Tuition

The JIOM summer program is supported and subsidized by the Jerusalem Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Sport in Israel, which allows to keep a lower price of tuition than other similar programs in Israel and Europe.


Application Fee for recorded auditions 40€

Application Fee for live auditions 25€ (100 NIS)

Summer Program 2019 tuition is: 1000€


The first initial deposit of 250€ is due within 1 week. The payment receipt of this deposit should be sent with your confirmation letter

The rest of tuition (750€) must be made later according to requirement described in the invitation letter.

All tuition deposits are non-refundable under any circumstances


Scholarships

The limited number of partial and full scholarships are available for participants demonstrating a high abilities and a particular needs. In special cases, the Summer Program covers the flying expenses and accommodation.

To apply for the scholarship, please include a brief explanation of your request at the time of your filling an application form.


Accommodation

The accommodation is not included in the tuition price. The participant may choose to supply their own housing or pay the additional price around €450 for Jerusalem Opera Festival to place them in a dormitory or home-stay situation.

The accommodation price may vary depending on the period and the type of accommodation that the participant chooses.


Important:

The participant does not obliged to stay in Jerusalem for all period of the summer program. After completing the planned classes and performances, the participant can leave the program and return home.

International Opera Competition

The International Opera Competition as a part of the Jerusalem Opera Masterclass takes place in Jerusalem, and is open for singers participants of the summer program. The main goal of the Competition is to assist the career development of talented young singers. It also acts as a bridge builder between the Israel and international music scenes. Through several rounds, a jury consisting of internationally renowned opera conductors, singers and casting associates from some of the world's top opera houses judge the participants' efforts.



Repertoire requirements

Candidates are invited to compile their own individual list of arias to be performed in the competition. The pieces presented in two rounds cannot be the same.



Arias

The repertoire list must consist of five opera arias. Consideration should be given to present arias in contrasting styles. Candidates are encouraged to include Israel music amongst their choices. The Competition has prepared a representative list of suggestions of works by Israels composers.



General requirements

Opera arias must be performed in the original key and, where possible, in their original language. Please note that you cannot perform the same works in the preliminary and the final rounds. All rounds of the Opera Competition are open to the public.




Rounds and repertoire


Preliminary round

All participants of JIOM summer program, who received an invitation to participate in the competition (described in the invitation letter), are invited to take part in the preliminary rounds. The repertoire consists of two self-chosen operatic arias from your repertoire list. Total performance time should not exceed 7 minutes. The pieces are to be performed with piano accompaniment.



Final

12-15 candidates will be admitted to the final. The repertoire consists of thee works from the contestant’s submitted list of arias. Two of the pieces must be operatic arias. If you have included Israeli's aria in your repertoire, these should be performed in the final. Total performance time per contestant should not exceed 15 minutes. The pieces are to be performed with piano accompaniment

Collaborative Pianists

The Jerusalem Opera Masterclass offers a unique opportunity for pianists to study the vocal coaching, collaborative and accompanying skills with a special focus on Italian, German and French repertoire.


Main points of program

Studying the Italian language, working on different music styles, developing coaching skills with internationally renowned artists.

Practical experience in working with the internationally distinguished faculty collaborative pianists, coaches, conductors, voice teachers, and stage directors.

Individual coaching lessons.

Participation in opera productions and master-classes with faculty conductors and coaches to develop a fuller understanding to opera style, breathing and phrasing.


The program is intended for the young professional post graduate pianists.

3 Scholarships will be offered to JIOM 2019 Summer Program for exceptionally talented pianists.

Scholarships provide:

€500 stipend for food and living expenses

Audition requirements

A solo work demonstrating your technical and musical development.

The performance of pieces for one of two following operas:

    "Rigoletto"

      Scena VI, "No.. Monterone!" until duetto n3

      Aria of Rigoletto, "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" without singer

    "Le nozze di Figaro"

      Finale of the II Act from, "Voi signor, che giusto siete"

      Aria of Conte, "Hai già vinta la causa" without singer

A collaborative performance with a singer (operatic aria or art song)
